Transforming Sargassum Risk into Sustainable Solutions

SARGEX is developing circular ways to transform Sargassum biomass into useful products rather than treating it only as waste to be removed. The project will explore routes to produce agricultural bioinputs, biochar and biogas through scalable processing and biodigestion approaches.
These solutions are designed to respond to the seasonal and variable nature of Sargassum while supporting zero-waste thinking. The goal is to create practical, sustainable options for coastal regions affected by recurring Sargassum landings.
The Solution

Large seasonal arrivals of Sargassum are placing growing pressure on coastal regions, especially in the Caribbean. When it washes ashore, Sargassum can affect tourism, fisheries, public health, biodiversity and local livelihoods. As it decomposes, it releases odours and gases and creates costly clean-up challenges. Climate change, warmer waters, changing currents and nutrient loading may increase future risks elsewhere. SARGEX starts from this problem: how can a difficult coastal burden become a useful and sustainable resource?
